Designing Learning Experiences to Support Global Habits of Mind (#globalclassroom chats – July 19 & 20, 2014)

As educators, current 21st century teaching includes designing learning experiences that expose students to real world problems, present learning to an authentic audience, connect to other classrooms and people outside the walls of their school, and also foster skills such as: creativity, curiosity, empathy, resilience and collaboration. Tony Wagner has his own list of Seven Survival Skills and how to close the Global Achievement Gap, if you will. This is a big job … it’s an incredibly huge, yet honorable task we have to tackle!

How are we, like Andrew Miller states, “learning designers” in the global sense? How do the habits of mind (i.e. creativity, curiosity, empathy, resilience and collaboration) play out in globally connecting with other classrooms? What habits of mind are harder to “get to?”

This weekend, we would like to chat about how we foster these habits of mind, and what our list of global survival skills would include.

 

Questions for our chat:

  1. What habits of mind do you find easiest to teach either directly or indirectly?
  2. Which ones are the hardest? Why?
  3. Do we reflect on these habits of mind collaboratively enough with other classrooms? How can we design experiences to help us do that in a semi-organic way?
  4. What resources help you design experiences that foster the habits of mind?
  5. What is our list of Global Habits of Mind? How do we or can we model this for our students?

Reflection Time: Global Projects – The #globalclassroom Chats (June 14/15)

Thank you to Heidi Hutchison @HeidiHutchison who is helping organise the chats this month, and provided our topic:

Creating and participating in global projects has fed my soul, but more importantly, it has nurtured the spirit of my students. I have come away with many positives through collaborating and partaking in global projects, but I have learned more through some failures this year. 

This weekend, we would like to reflect through sharing what worked and what didn’t work for us.

#GlobalEd13 Sessions You May Have Missed

Over the course of the Global Education Conference 2013, I was lucky enough to attend several fascinating sessions and keynotes which helped me better understand the work I do … As a global educator, I learn within, from, and with a wider community, and I am a passionate believer in the power of story as a means of sharing best practice in education.

Tatyana Chernaya – A glimpse into the life of a connected EFL Teacher

I have been chatting with Tatyana for some years in Hello Little World Skypers, and her students participated in my World Water Day side project earlier this year. I knew she was an English as a Foreign Language teacher, and that she worked with children with special needs; however, I had NO idea just what a truly AMAZING job she has been doing for all of these years.

Heidi Hutchinson – The #Malala Project: An Attempt at a Global PBL

Heidi came to us a year or so ago with an idea. Little did we know that she was about to create an extraordinary global action project, empowering students around the world to come together to support Malala and girls’ right to an education. A somewhat controversial issue in some parts of the world, this project made quite an impact on the students and teachers involved, and we are proud to have supported it.

Stories from Hello Little World Skypers

I am indebted to Stefan Nielsen for introducing me to HLW Skypers some years ago, because this little Skype community has completely transformed my personal and professional life.

Through the conversations I’ve had with this group, I have developed very close friendships with teachers literally spread out across the globe. Signing into Skype each morning / evening, there’s usually upwards of 100 messages to scroll through, and there’s almost always someone online to chat / Skype with, or to (literally) help you teach your class. These are our stories …

The #Malala Project

Last Monday night, I took part in a Twitter Chat for The Global Classroom Project. I wanted to find out how to collaborate and connect in a meaningful way with educators from around the world in order to be more effective in helping my students become better global citizens. I also wanted to find out how to get participants for a project idea I had called World Class 4 Kids.

What ended up happening, was more powerful than I could have expected. I learned more about a little girl in Pakistan, named Malala Yousufzai.

What happened after that was a series of back and forths which are now emails between a teacher in a rural town in Australia and a teacher in a city in the United States trying to make a plan to teach our students that violence cannot be the final silencer in what is right. We share a common belief that Malala’s story, her truth, is not just her fight, but all of ours. We are creating a project that we hope the rest of the world’s children can find a way to support.

Launching The #Malala Project

We would like teachers to share Malala’s story and what she was fighting for: the right for girls to go to school and be educated and the right for freedom of speech in sharing her truth. We know this can be a sensitive topic for young children and know that teachers need to present the violence of it all in a developmentally appropriate way. However, we believe, her story needs to be told.

We would like classrooms to send us a picture or short video of 2 minutes or less of students supporting Malala’s cause – a song, artwork, posters, whatever creative way they can think of showing the world believes that ALL girls deserve the right to go to school.

In addition, this is a work in progress and we would love to hear your feedback and suggestions so feel free to leave comments and suggestions here.  Please join The Global Classroom wiki and then join The #Malala Project.
